Building resilience for Wellington’s wastewater network

Wellington Water is set to begin work on behalf of Wellington City Council, on the major wastewater pipe in between the intersection of Willeston Street and the Mercer Street/Wakefield Street intersection. This pipe has a history of failing over the last 5 years, causing disruption and leakage of wastewater into the harbour.

This project is being delivered in two stages; this section is being done now to allow work on Te Matapihi | Wellington Central Library to continue. 

The works are set to begin on Monday, 20 March and will run over a ten-week period.

The Victoria Street work is 1 of 5 related projects in Wellington City that will significantly improve Wellington’s wastewater infrastructure.   

The project will increase resilience of the CBD’s wastewater network by lowering the contamination risk to the harbour and supporting the wastewater infrastructure’s capability to support a growing population according to Wellington Water Chief Advisor Wastewater, Steve Hutchison.

“This work on Victoria Street is mainly to replace an old pipe which has split several times before and disrupted traffic and pedestrian movement in the area.”
