Major wastewater upgrade for Wellington CBD

Work began this morning on the first stage of a major upgrade of wastewater infrastructure for Wellington’s CBD – the five project Wellington CBD Wastewater Renewals and Upgrades programme.

Wellington Water is delivering the programme for Wellington City Council and today began the first project to build a new pump station and install new rising main pipes in Inglewood Place at the corner of Taranaki and Dixon Streets.

Wellington City Council Chief Executive Barbara McKerrow said: “This vital project is a key enabler to Wellington’s growth plans over the next 30 years. The Taranaki St project significantly increases the amount of wastewater the city can handle. It makes the city’s infrastructure more resilient, allowing it to keep up with the projected housing densification and projected population increases, while providing increased protection to the natural environment.”

Wellington Water’s Chief Advisor Wastewater Steve Hutchison says the construction in Inglewood Place is a big job and will necessitate changing access to Inglewood Place for the 18 months that work will be underway.

“The construction site will mean Inglewood Place will be closed to traffic and on-street parking but the parking building on Inglewood Place, the Les Mills gym and other businesses will still be accessible.  A section of the Taranaki St footpath will also be closed so pedestrians will need to use the Inglewood Place footpath.

“We appreciate that the works will make access to the area difficult, and we urge people to continue to support businesses in the area.

“We will have traffic management in place throughout the construction to ensure the safety of our crews and the public.

Our crews will be on-site Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 6pm.
