Wallace Street closed to traffic for up to six months
From early Sunday morning (5 January 2020), Wallace Street in the central Wellington suburb of Mt Cook will be closed to through traffic until mid-2020.
This will allow council-owned Wellington Water to install major new drinking water pipes under the road, that will connect the future Omāroro water reservoir to the city’s existing network.
Cyclists, walkers and scooter users will be able to safely access Wallace St at all times.
Buses that use the closed section of Wallace St will divert along Wright Street, where temporary bus stops have been marked out.
Motorists are being advised to expect traffic delays in the area, and public transport users should allow for extra time especially when people return to work and traffic volumes increase.
The closure affects Wallace St between John St and Hargreaves St. Residents and delivery vehicles will have access to the closed section, but traffic won’t be able to get past the work site. Vehicles will need to use either the Wright St diversion or the preferred alternate route via Adelaide Road.
Omaroro is a 35 million litre (14 Olympic swimming pools) reservoir that will add significant resilience to the city’s water infrastructure, providing for critical maintenance, population growth, and emergency supply. Construction for the reservoir is planned to begin this year, after the major pipe work is complete.
