We're upgrading the wastewater network in Titahi Bay to improve its performance, minimise public health risks, reduce overflows to the environment and enhance the health of the ocean.
The project team will use a combination of renewal methods, including trenchless pipe relining where suitable, to minimise disruption to residents, road users, and the wider community.
This is a major wastewater renewal project in the South Beach Access Road catchment area of Tītahi Bay. The project will help improve water quality, protect public health, and reduce the amount of wastewater entering the environment.
The South Beach catchment serves approximately 700 households. Investigations have identified sections of the wastewater network that are in poor condition, with cracked pipes and damaged joints allowing wastewater to leak into surrounding ground and potentially enter the stormwater system. These faults are believed to be contributing to elevated levels of E. coli detected at the South Beach stormwater outlet
Why this work is needed
For several years, monitoring at the South Beach stormwater culvert has recorded high levels of E. coli, including during dry weather when contamination would not normally be expected.
Tiaki Wai has already undertaken extensive investigations through the Knowing Your Pipes programme and other pollution reduction initiatives. While a number of public and private wastewater faults have been repaired, further inspections have revealed that many wastewater pipes in the catchment require renewal or rehabilitation.
This project is another important step towards improving environmental outcomes for Tītahi Bay by reducing wastewater contamination and helping protect the health of local waterways and the harbour.
